Octavius Tea Estates in Britisher's Time
Tea is the cardinal of all beverages, a leading dignitary and the most fundamental of all refreshments, a brilliant scarlet colour drink, best when served piping hot. Perfecting the art of producing such a sovereign has not been an overnight task. It is an art that has been achieved through accumulation of century old knowledge and implementing it with dedication, sincerity and expertise. Flourishing the vibrant essence of the finest of tea with a delicate shade of nobility, has always been the prime maxim with Octavius.
Octavius Tea & Industries Ltd., founded in 1898, as a subsidiary of Octavius Steel and Co. Ltd. was a proprietary business headed by Walter Duncan. The establishment was initially formed as a potential investment from the surplus of more profitable steel industries, in erstwhile British India. Seemingly impressed by the beneficial climate of easy trade on the Indian shores, the intrepid traveller, a young Walter Duncan, descending from a farming family from Glasgow, set up the tea trading companies to cultivate the ‘honey brew’ of the Darjeeling slopes tea, across Dooars, Cachar & Sylhet. It was around this same time that CA Goodricke & Co. in conjunction with Andrew Yule also set up independent tea plantations in and around the area.
When India attained freedom, the tea estates of Octavius were acquired by an Indian trading company, still working under their original British brand name. Later, in the late 90’s it changed hands and Octavius Tea and its plantations are now headed by its second Indian owner under the same name, the Octavius Tea &Industries Ltd. who exercise full control over the tea plantations and its produce, with a view to providing the same essence and fulfilling a commitment to a benchmark in taste and quality as its British owners had envisioned. Building up on our rich inheritance and glorious past heritage, Octavius Tea was established with a mission to epitomise the art of drinking gourmet teas and with an endeavour to make available the luxury of pure and unblended, single origin Indian teas to connoisseurs across India and the world.
Encouraged by the success of the tea gardens, and motivated with the acquired experience, Octavius Tea & Industries Ltd are also proud owners of Coffee Plantations in the tranquillity and serenity of the Nilgiri hills under the name of Octavius Plantations Ltd. Octavius produces coffee beans of the highest quality, handpicked after stringent selection.
